Genesis
The foundational book of the Bible, Genesis tells the story of creation, beginning with God speaking the universe into existence and forming the first humans, Adam and Eve. It quickly moves to the entrance of sin into the world, the devastating global flood, and the covenant God made with Noah. The central part of Genesis focuses on the foundational stories of Israel’s ancestors: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (who was renamed Israel). Abraham’s faith leads to God’s promise that his descendants will become a great nation and inherit a promised land. The book concludes with Jacob’s twelve sons, the start of the twelve tribes, settling in Egypt during a famine, setting the stage for the next book.
Moved by Judah's sacrifice, Joseph reveals his identity to his terrified brothers. He assures them that God sent him ahead to preserve their lives during the famine.
Jacob is overjoyed to learn Joseph is alive. God assures Jacob He will make him a great nation in Egypt. Jacob and his entire family (70 people) move to Goshen.
Joseph presents his family to Pharaoh, who grants them the fertile land of Goshen. Joseph manages the famine brilliantly, consolidating all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh.
Jacob, near death, adopts Joseph's two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. Jacob purposefully gives the main blessing to the younger son, Ephraim, reaffirming God’s sovereign choice.
