Joshua
The Book of Joshua picks up immediately after Moses's death, detailing the story of Joshua, the new leader God appoints to succeed Moses. This book focuses on the successful military campaigns and the subsequent division of the Promised Land (Canaan) among the twelve tribes of Israel. It emphasizes the importance of obedience to God as the key to success in conquest, famously shown by the miraculous fall of the city of Jericho. Despite some setbacks caused by disobedience, Joshua leads the Israelites to victory, fulfilling God's promise to Abraham. The book concludes with Joshua’s final speeches, urging the people to choose to serve the Lord faithfully.
All the men born during the wilderness wanderings are circumcised. Joshua meets the Commander of the Lord's Army (likely a pre-incarnate Christ) near Jericho and bows in worship.
God gives the strategy for Jericho: the army marches around the city once a day for six days. On the seventh day, they march seven times, the priests blow the trumpets, and the walls miraculously collapse.
Israel suffers defeat at Ai because Achan secretly took spoils from Jericho (a sin called "devoted things"). Achan and his family are judged, restoring God's favor to Israel.
Joshua sets an ambush for the city of Ai. The city is captured and destroyed, and Joshua fulfills Moses's command by building an altar and reading the Law publicly.
