Joshua
The Book of Joshua picks up immediately after Moses's death, detailing the story of Joshua, the new leader God appoints to succeed Moses. This book focuses on the successful military campaigns and the subsequent division of the Promised Land (Canaan) among the twelve tribes of Israel. It emphasizes the importance of obedience to God as the key to success in conquest, famously shown by the miraculous fall of the city of Jericho. Despite some setbacks caused by disobedience, Joshua leads the Israelites to victory, fulfilling God's promise to Abraham. The book concludes with Joshua’s final speeches, urging the people to choose to serve the Lord faithfully.
The Gibeonites, hearing of Israel's victories, trick Joshua into making a covenant with them by claiming to be from a distant land. Joshua spares them but enslaves them as woodcutters.
Five Amorite kings attack Gibeon for their covenant with Israel. Joshua rescues them, and God sends a hailstorm. God miraculously makes the sun stand still for an entire day.
Joshua defeats the massive northern coalition of kings at the Waters of Merom. Joshua then burns Hazor and conquers all the major strongholds in the north, completing the conquest of Canaan.
This chapter lists all thirty-one kings on both sides of the Jordan River whom Moses and Joshua conquered, serving as a comprehensive military summary of the successful conquest.
