Matthew
Matthew is the first Gospel and serves as a powerful bridge between the Old and New Testaments. Written primarily for a Jewish audience, it strongly emphasizes that Jesus Christ is the promised Messiah, the King descended from David. Matthew begins with Jesus’ genealogy, birth, and the famous Sermon on the Mount, which lays out the ethical standards of the Kingdom of Heaven. The book records many of Jesus’ powerful miracles and parables, demonstrating his divine authority. It culminates with Jesus’ death, resurrection, and the Great Commission, where he instructs his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, establishing the foundation for the expansion of the Christian Church to the entire world.
Jesus explains the Kingdom of Heaven using seven parables, including the Sower and the Wheat and the Weeds, to reveal truth to those who seek it.
Herod executes John the Baptist. Jesus miraculously feeds five thousand people, and later walks on water, rescuing Peter when his faith falters.
Jesus condemns the Pharisees for honoring human tradition over God's commands. He heals the daughter of a faithful Canaanite woman and feeds four thousand.
Peter declares, "You are the Christ." Jesus warns His disciples that to follow Him, they must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Him.
