Psalms
The Book of Psalms is the primary worship book of the Bible, a collection of 150 sacred songs, prayers, and poems written by various authors, primarily King David. These songs express the full range of human emotion: joy, praise, gratitude, sorrow, anger, doubt, and hope. The Psalms are traditionally grouped into five books, covering different types of worship: psalms of praise, laments, royal psalms, wisdom psalms, and historical psalms. They served as the ancient Jewish hymn book and continue to be a central resource for worship, meditation, and spiritual guidance for both Jews and Christians, teaching believers how to communicate openly and honestly with God in every circumstance of life.
Asaph struggles with the prosperity of the wicked. He finds his perspective restored only when he enters God's sanctuary and realizes the wicked's slippery path.
A lament over the destruction of the Temple. The Psalmist asks why God has forgotten His people and calls on God to remember His covenant and His power over the sea.
A hymn declaring God's just rule. God will judge the earth righteously, humbling the proud and exalting the righteous at the proper time.
A celebration of God's power in Jerusalem. The psalm praises God for breaking the weapons of the enemy and protecting Zion with terrifying might.
