Psalms
The Book of Psalms is the primary worship book of the Bible, a collection of 150 sacred songs, prayers, and poems written by various authors, primarily King David. These songs express the full range of human emotion: joy, praise, gratitude, sorrow, anger, doubt, and hope. The Psalms are traditionally grouped into five books, covering different types of worship: psalms of praise, laments, royal psalms, wisdom psalms, and historical psalms. They served as the ancient Jewish hymn book and continue to be a central resource for worship, meditation, and spiritual guidance for both Jews and Christians, teaching believers how to communicate openly and honestly with God in every circumstance of life.
Asaph struggles with doubts about God's faithfulness. He remembers God's past mighty deeds (the Exodus) and finds his heart renewed with trust.
A long historical psalm recounting Israel's history of rebellion. It teaches future generations to remember God's mighty works and not be stiff-necked.
A prayer for vengeance after Jerusalem's destruction. The Psalmist asks God to save His people from disgrace and display His glory among the nations.
A lament asking God, the Shepherd of Israel, to restore His people. The psalm compares Israel to a vine God planted and now allows to be destroyed.
