Psalms
The Book of Psalms is the primary worship book of the Bible, a collection of 150 sacred songs, prayers, and poems written by various authors, primarily King David. These songs express the full range of human emotion: joy, praise, gratitude, sorrow, anger, doubt, and hope. The Psalms are traditionally grouped into five books, covering different types of worship: psalms of praise, laments, royal psalms, wisdom psalms, and historical psalms. They served as the ancient Jewish hymn book and continue to be a central resource for worship, meditation, and spiritual guidance for both Jews and Christians, teaching believers how to communicate openly and honestly with God in every circumstance of life.
A historical psalm recounting Israel's suffering from a young age. The nation asks God to defeat the enemies who have constantly attacked them.
A deep cry for mercy: "Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord." The psalm expresses confident hope in God's forgiveness and redemption.
David asserts his humility. He states his heart is not proud, and he rests his soul calmly in God, like a weaned child resting with his mother.
A historical psalm recalling David's vow to build God a dwelling place. The psalm celebrates God's promise to make Zion His permanent dwelling.
