Jeremiah 13

God uses two powerful symbolic actions to teach Jeremiah about Judah's pride and coming ruin. First, Jeremiah wears a linen sash which he is commanded to hide until it becomes rotten and worthless, symbolizing Judah’s moral decay. Second, God warns that He will fill the people with drunkenness, symbolizing confusion before their exile. Jeremiah pleads with the royal family to humble themselves. The prophet laments the coming exile, emphasizing that Judah’s deep-seated habits of evil are impossible to change.

The Philistines defeat Israel in battle and capture the Ark of the Covenant. The shock of the news kills Eli, and his daughter-in-law names her newborn son Ichabod ("The glory has departed").
