Jeremiah 32

Jeremiah 32

While imprisoned, Jeremiah is commanded by God to perform a symbolic act: buy a field from his cousin Hanamel in Anathoth, even though the Babylonians are besieging Jerusalem. Jeremiah executes the legal purchase, sealing the deeds. This act demonstrates Jeremiah's faith in God’s promise: "Houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land." Jeremiah prays, marveling at God's power. God confirms the certainty of both the destruction (for sin) and the restoration (for God's faithfulness) of the land.
