The Babylonian general, Nebuzaradan, releases Jeremiah from prison and gives him the choice to go to Babylon or remain in Judah. Jeremiah chooses to remain in the land with the remaining poor people. Gedaliah, appointed by Babylon as governor, urges the people to submit to Babylon and assures them they can live peacefully in the land. Jeremiah joins Gedaliah in Mizpah.
