The Queen of Sheba travels from afar to test Solomon with difficult questions. She is overwhelmed by his wisdom and wealth, proclaiming that the fame she heard was only half the truth.
Solomon falls into sin, accumulating excessive horses, gold, and 700 wives and 300 concubines. His foreign wives lead him into idolatry. God announces He will tear the kingdom from Solomon’s son.
Solomon's son, Rehoboam, rejects the counsel of the elders and threatens to be even harsher than his father. The ten northern tribes rebel and make Jeroboam their king, splitting the kingdom permanently.
God sends a man of God to Bethel to prophesy against Jeroboam's illegitimate altar. Jeroboam tries to seize the prophet and his hand is miraculously withered. The prophet is later deceived and killed.
God sends the prophet Ahijah to Jeroboam's wife, prophesying that God will completely wipe out Jeroboam's line and scatter Israel for their idolatry, beginning with the death of his son.
This chapter summarizes the reigns of Abijah and Asa in Judah (who faithfully removed idols) and the reign of Nadab and Baasha in Israel, who continued Jeroboam's wickedness.
The prophet Jehu prophesies against King Baasha's dynasty. The chapter covers the short, violent reigns of several kings in Israel, ending with the rise of the notoriously evil King Ahab.
The prophet Elijah appears, declaring a severe three-year drought on Israel. God hides Elijah, feeding him by ravens. Elijah later raises a widow's son from the dead in Zarephath.
Elijah challenges the 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. Elijah calls down fire from heaven to consume his soaking wet sacrifice, proving the Lord is the one true God.
Jezebel vows to kill Elijah. Elijah flees in fear to Mount Horeb. God appears to him, not in the wind, fire, or earthquake, but in a gentle whisper, and commissions him to anoint Hazael and Jehu.
King Ahab miraculously defeats the superior Syrian army twice. God instructs Ahab to kill the defeated Syrian king, Ben-Hadad, but Ahab foolishly spares him, incurring God's wrath.
King Ahab covets the vineyard of Naboth. His wicked wife, Jezebel, orchestrates Naboth's false accusation and death. Elijah confronts Ahab and prophesies the violent destruction of his entire family.
