Abraham dies and is buried. Isaac and Rebekah have twin sons, Esau (who sells his birthright) and Jacob, setting up the central rivalry of the next generation.
Isaac repeats his father's mistake by lying about Rebekah to King Abimelech. God reaffirms the covenant promises to Isaac and blesses him with immense prosperity.
Rebekah and Jacob conspire to deceive blind Isaac into giving Jacob the blessing of the firstborn. Esau is furious and vows to kill Jacob, forcing Jacob to flee.
Fleeing Esau, Jacob sees a vision of a ladder (staircase) to heaven at Bethel. God reaffirms the Abrahamic Covenant to Jacob and promises to be with him.
Jacob arrives in Haran and falls in love with Rachel. He serves Laban for seven years but is tricked into marrying Leah and must serve seven more years for Rachel.
The rivalry between Leah and Rachel intensifies over childbearing. God eventually remembers Rachel, who gives birth to Joseph. Jacob prepares to return home wealthy.
Jacob flees Haran with his family and wealth, fearing Laban's hostility. Laban pursues them, but God warns him not to harm Jacob. They make a covenant of peace.
Fearing Esau's approaching army, Jacob wrestles all night with an angel or God. Jacob refuses to let go until he is blessed and his name is changed to Israel.
Jacob and Esau finally meet. Jacob bows in submission, but Esau embraces him and weeps, showing a powerful reconciliation between the two long-estranged brothers.
Jacob’s daughter Dinah is violated in Shechem. Her brothers, Simeon and Levi, savagely avenge her by tricking and murdering all the men of the city.
God commands Jacob to return to Bethel, where he destroys all foreign idols. On the journey, Rachel tragically dies giving birth to Benjamin. Isaac dies at 180.
This chapter provides the genealogy of Esau and his descendants, the Edomites. This lineage established the nation that would become Israel's perpetual enemy.
