The first of the Servant Songs. God introduces His Servant, whom He upholds and will use to establish justice on earth. The Servant will not cry out or break a bruised reed.
God assures Israel that He is their Redeemer and will be with them through fire and water. God says He is doing a new thing—making a way in the wilderness to bring His people home.
God promises to pour out His Spirit on Israel's descendants, causing them to flourish. God again mocks idols and declares that He alone is the Redeemer who will restore Jerusalem.
God identifies the Persian King Cyrus as His anointed, whom He will empower to conquer Babylon and order the rebuilding of Jerusalem, even though Cyrus does not know Him.
God compares Himself to the helpless idols of Babylon, which must be carried by their worshipers. God assures Israel that He has carried them from birth and will carry them to old age.
A taunt against Babylon, the "Queen of Kingdoms." She is commanded to descend into the dust because her arrogance, sorcery, and self-security will lead to sudden, total destruction.
God sternly rebukes Israel for their stubbornness and hypocrisy but assures them He is their only Redeemer. He urges them to leave Babylon and proclaim their freedom.
The second Servant Song. The Servant laments that he has labored in vain, but God promises to make Him a light for the Gentiles and restore Israel.
The third Servant Song. The Servant describes His perfect obedience and the abuse He endured, offering His back to those who beat Him, trusting completely in God.
God encourages Jerusalem to remember their ancestor Abraham and look to God, who will comfort Zion and make her desolate places like the Garden of Eden.
A beautiful prophecy announcing the arrival of the messenger bringing good news of peace and salvation. The nations will see the Lord's holy arm and the glory of His power.
The fourth and most famous Servant Song, detailing the suffering of the Messiah. He was despised, bore our grief, was wounded for our transgressions, and was cut off from the land of the living.
